That's 46 participants, which I think will be a representative sample
size, based on previous experience.  Here is the breakdown:

talk.politics.space got
    24 first-place votes (nine folks wanted nothing else)
    10 second-place votes
    58 total points

misc.activism.space got
    eight first-place votes (three folks wanted nothing else)
    13 second-place votes
    29 total points

sci.space.policy got
    15 first-place votes (five folks wanted nothing else)
    six second-place votes
    36 total points

Based on these point totals, talk.politics.space clearly has more support
than either of the other two suggested group names, and is therefore IMPO
most likely to be able to win in a vote.  Also, based on these point totals,
misc.activism.space is highly unlikely to win in a vote.

Comment: it is my intention to continue the path toward new group creation
by issuing a Call for Votes for talk.politics.space at the end of the week.
I call upon supporters of the other two group names to support t.p.s.  As
the choice most likely to win in a vote, anyone who cares remotely about
the creation of a space politics newsgroup should want one that would be
supported.

Further, I am concerned about the split between t.p.s and s.s.p.  Although
the creation of s.s.p appears unlikely to me, based on the poll totals,
there are enough folks out there supporting it that t.p.s could be hindered
in doing its job if it is created.  The objective is to create a newsgroup
that will extract most of the political traffic from sci.space, and no group
of this type will work unless a large percentage of posters actively help
to make it work.

If anybody cares about the polling breakdown, send e-mail.  I didn't want
to type it all in :-(.

Subject: Cosmonauts to do space walk June 25th for antenna repair

   On board the Soviet's Mir space station cosmonauts Anatoli Artsebarski and
Sergei Krikalev, are preparing for a space walk that will take place
tomorrow (June 25th).  The main activity will be the repair of the
docking antenna that caused the docking failure during the Progress M-7
docking of Mar 28th.  This antenna was subsequently found to be damaged
as shown by the Apr. 25th space walk inspection of Viktor Afansyev and
Musa Manarov.  It could not be repaired until the new crew arrived after
May 12th on Soyuz TM-12.  This new EVA is planed to be 4 hours long.

What's with this United Space Federation.  Is it a big joke or what.
All I read on this net from the USF is the same rhetoric about the
cold war, the military industrial complex, war time economies, etc.,

It's really quite simple, Bob; The political asperations of those who support
'one world' government, having failed on earth, are now being pushed on a
'space' platform.

I find it interesting that so many posts in a supposedly non-political  DL have
such distinctive socialist political overtones.

It appears to me to be an extention of the recent trend toward turing higher
level education,  and the like, into political re-education.

If I were more cynical (Some folks consider that impossible... :*D) I'd say
'PC'...

I must've missed the posting this references, but I'll state publicly
here and now that I think Mary's posting are among the most intelligent
and informative on the net, and would be extremely disappointed if she
were driven away.

As for government employee postings, it seems to me pretty important
to get information from their point of view as well...

Wasn't there talk of launching a communications relay satellite to
orbit Jupiter to relay Galileo's signal if the antenna cannot be
deployed? Is this plan still being considered? If the antenna fails
to open in 15 months, will there still be time to prepare and
launch such a satellite? [I guess it is likely that there are not
enough money around for this plan....]

Carlos!  Steve!  Like dudes, get it together!  Don Allen is an obvious
genius who REALLY knows these things.  I mean, we must have been out
to lunch regarding Phobos, right!?!

So, maybe JPL could save a whole lot of money by hiring Don Allen to
contact the aliens and just TELL us all about the other planets.  Then
we could just go to the beach...

I was thinking about hacking TASS to support author kill like RN, but
on second thought, with dona in this group I don't need the NatEnq
for comedy!

Yes, the image data has been revewied by many experts from both the public
and private sector, and after many hours of painstaking analysis they have
come to the same conclusion.  However, the results are so startling that
they have tried to keep it quiet lest the populace be seized by panic.
